The smile that covers my face when I think of the Great Kids Farm comes from many places! It’s the scene of so much positive energy when Baltimore City School students get their first taste of something they aren’t familiar with, like sorrel or figs. It is listening to our Farm Manager, Greg Strella, mentor interns who are having a first experience in the working world. It is seeing volunteers like Miss Katie introduce kids to the world of honey bees. It is watching budding scientists observe a worm or caterpillar. It is introducing people to nature and the soil.
Anim Steel said in his keynote address at Friends of Great Kids Farm’s food and jazz event last fall, the earth is the source of all life, and if we can bring students to the nurturing and caring that comes from growing things in the soil, we will have made a difference in their lives. That’s the beauty and mission of Great Kids Farm.
