As I work with the committee preparing for the October 11 Friends of Great Kids Farm Fall Food and Jazz Festival, I am continually amazed at how the Farm’s work--and the desire to support it--draws in so many diverse members of the Baltimore community. This year’s event will showcase the work of Baltimore City Schools’ five high school culinary arts programs. Students from these schools will prepare the delicious food that guests will enjoy and will engage in a friendly competition for the ‘best dish’. In an incredible gesture of support and encouragement to these budding chefs, top Baltimore restaurants are paired up with each team to offer guidance and provide ingredients. Representatives from businesses, City Schools, the media, and local culinary celebrities will offer their time as guest judges. McCormick and other companies are sponsoring the event with funds or contributions of food and drinks. What an wonderful way for the broader Baltimore community to support the student chefs who use Great Kids Farm as a living classroom, as well as all the young people who visit the Farm to learn how their food is grown, and eat the Farm’s produce in their cafeterias!
This year’s event will prove to be as fun and tasty as the last! While listening to the delightful music of the Dunbar High School Jazz Band, guests can tour the farm, enjoy delectable food and drink, and be part of the growing movement in Baltimore that believes in real food and experiential educational opportunities for city kids. Last year 150 people came to the Festival, and we are expecting this year’s attendance to be even higher. I, for one, cannot wait! Please check out the event details here and join us!
