Volunteering has always been important to me, but it had taken the backburner while completing my Masters Degree. As graduation and the prospect of more time in my schedule drew near, I started searching for a place where my talents could serve a mission I was passionate about. Stumbling upon an article about Great Kids Farm, I quickly realized that this was the place for me. It took some time but thanks to Business Volunteers Maryland, I was connected to the founding members of Friends of Great Kids Farm and soon thereafter I joined the Board. I was thrilled and have been captivated ever since!
What makes this place so magical?
- Being outside in nature, with animals, plants, fresh air, and the bright sun is my happy place. I’m from many generations of Iowa farmers and spent my childhood summers on our family farm. Hard work is tiring and satisfying. Real food is what everyone deserves to eat. I want my kids to experience this, and for all kids to have the same opportunity.
- It’s preparing our kids for success. We know that a strong education system is essential for America to lead in the 21st century but they need nutritious food to have the stamina to get through the school day. Great Kid Farm is bringing this produce to City Schools! We’re also helping kids experience the joy of learning in the peace of nature and developing their career skills.
- It’s new. It’s fun. It’s challenging. I was previously on a well-established, collegiate Board and was looking for something different. In contrast, I’ve worked with Friends through the start-up phase. We’re pioneering a new model, creatively solving problems and finding the right folks to advance the work. It’s been a real pleasure helping to build this organization with such an incredible group of people.
If you are looking for a nonprofit to volunteer with, know that there is a perfect match for you. It may take some time but I’m hopeful that you too can find that magical place.
